I was neither born in Japan nor have I ever been there (altough I would love to go). I have had very little formal schooling in Japanese (a class that met almost every week for a few months out of the year); what Japanese I do know is a result of intensive self-study for the past three years (and lots of anime and manga ^_^). None of the translation work I have ever done has ever been for profit; all such projects were done due to my own personal interest or requests from friends. The only real evidence I can give that this translation is not mere bull is essentially my own word and various dictionary entries. In short, I am not a professional translator. Yet. TeikokuKagekidan, written as 帝国華撃団, however, refers to the Imperial fighting team. However, if I were to translate it as such, the whole pun element, a key part of the story, is lost. Yet a simple romanization of both makes little sense, especially in the same sentence. Thus it really only works in Japanese. The key is this: the same people are a part of the same organization based in the same location and thus, have the same name, but the meanings (and readings) are different. The members of the Hana-Gumi can use the words 'TeikokuKagekidan' and 'TeiGeki' freely in public without anyone suspecting a thing (up to a point, of course). But it really doesn't work in English. Hopefully by now you can recognize the kanji that make up either name and know when to distinguish between them, keeping in mind that a straight translation of the names undermines the whole situation. This is accomplished by having one character attack an enemy while another character is in range of that enemy with his or her normal (普通) attack. Mind you, this doesn't always happen even when two or even six characters are all in range of the same enemy, and when it does, the amount of additional damage done depends on the two characters involved and the current episode. Of course, when I say 'Gattai (合体 - Combination) Techniques,' that is not what I am referring to at all. I am instead referring to those special techniques of mass destruction performed by Oogami and one other character whose mood is especially high. The result is an omnidirectional technique that deals a very large amount of damage to all enemies in a certain radius, automatically destroying all non-boss enemies (with a few exceptions which will be obvious when you see them). The requirements for a 'gattai technique' are as follows: - The girl in question must have an exceptionally high mood. This is indicated by an extra 'pizazz' at the beginning of her turn, featuring the girl's symbol. Trust me, you'll know this when you see it. This girl does not necessarily have to be the one in your #1 slot; early on it will most often be the 'girl of the episode' (e.g., in this case, Iris). - Oogami and that girl must be in adjacent spaces. They do not have to be on the same level topographically, but the squares share a side. Being in a space diagonal from the other won't work. - For both Oogami and the girl, the Ki'ai (気合) meters must be full. This definitely slows down repeat usage. - For lack of better terminology, the game must 'let' you do it. For example, by the end of this episode, Sakura had an extremely high mood, with the 'pizazz' (as I'm calling it here) and everything. But I simply wasn't allowed to perform the move. I don't know if this is because this was the 'Iris' episode or whether it was too early in the game or what, but I wasn't allowed to do it. You'll know if you can perform the move if there is an extra option in the attack (攻) menu, 合体 (gattai). It can be performed on either Oogami's turn or the girl's turn provided the above conditions are met. That said, I will now be providing the combination techniques for each girl, one or two girls per episode while the game is progressing through the 'character' episodes. And as I wasn't actually able to peform this technique this episode, I've forgotten which lines are said by Oogami and which are said by Iris.
