I was neither born in Japan nor have I ever been there (altough I would love to go). I have had very little formal schooling in Japanese (a class that met almost every week for a few months out of the year); what Japanese I do know is a result of intensive self-study for the past three years (and lots of anime and manga ^_^). None of the translation work I have ever done has ever been for profit; all such projects were done due to my own personal interest or requests from friends. The only real evidence I can give that this translation is not mere bull is essentially my own word and various dictionary entries. In short, I am not a professional translator. Yet. Furthermore, none of my work is authorized by SEGA, RED, or any other company. I am doing this merely as a service to fans who will probably never see the game otherwise translated into English. The Taishou era was from 1912 - 1926 (with formal coronation of the Taishou emperor in 1915). It was the second era since the fall of the famous Tokugawa shogunate, immediate following the Meiji (明治 "the enlightened rule") era (1868 - 1912) and restoration. By the end of the Meiji, Japan was rapidly achieving westernization. The time of our story is one of relative peace after the first World War. At least, in the real world. But in the world of Sakura Taisen, it is the 太正, not 大正 Taishou era. Most of what you may know about Japan during this time in our world holds true; however, technology here is heavily advanced thanks to the power of steam, the benefits of which are seen rampant throughout Sakura Taisen 2. What's more, things are not all they seem, as what appears to be an otherwise normal playhouse is in actuality the base of an operations for a top secret offense force - the 帝国華撃団 (TeikokuKagekidan) - whose opponents are more often than not other than human... ~ 君、死にたもうことなかれ ~ ~ Kimi, shinitamou koto nakare ~ ~ You shall not die ~ (From Ming's Sakura Wars page : "The title of the game, "kimi, shinitamou koto nakare", is inspired by the title "kimi shinitamou koto nakare" of an anti-war poem (circa 1900, time of the Russo-Japanese War) by the famous Japanese poetess Yosano Akiko (与謝野晶子 , 1878-1942), whose works include Tangled Hair (みだれ髪 , originally published in 1901), which is noted for its passionate depiction of love." After some consideration, having found a line of dialogue in a later episode in which Oogami says something to the effect of 'the way it's so quiet [backstage] you wouldn't even think there was a storm outside,' using the same 'uso no you' phrase. (ご苦労 Gokurou literally means "honorable trouble" and is often used, either in appreciation or sarcasm, regarding a task requiring a considerable amount of work, in this case, sailing around South America.) 大神 ひさしぶりの海上訓練でだいぶしぼられました。 I was able to squeeze much out of the maritime training after being away so long. (This may not be correct, since I'm not completely sure about 'daibu shiboraremashita.') 米田 そうかい、そうかい。……ところで大神、久しぶりの帝都はどうだ？ I see, I see. ......By the way, Oogami, what do you think of Teito after being gone so long? 大神 そうですね。以前にもまして活気にあふれていて、そして……平和に見えます。 Yes, well - much more than before, it's overflowing with liveliness, and...... Literally, "Sou desu ne" translates to "It is so, isn't it?", which, to anyone unfamiliar with this practice, may seem a little odd and/or illogical. (少尉 Shou'i - Ensign, when used for naval officers. 貴殿 Kiden - 'you'; however, according to a dictionary of mine, this is now a term of ridicule. 隊長 Taichou - Company Commander or Captain; 部隊 - (eg., military) force, unit, or corps. I am still unsure about the use of 以下 (ika - below, lower, the following) in this sentence to modify 部隊隊長 Butai Taichou.) 帝国華撃団 対降魔迎撃部隊、花組！ TeikokuKagekidan TaiKoumaGeigekiButai, Hana-Gumi! (TeikokuKagekidan - translates to "The Imperial Flower/Splendor Offensive Group"; Tai - anti or vs. Kouma - the Kouma are demons originally seen in the first Sakura Taisen game; more on them later. Geigeki - one dictionary I have translates this as "ambush attack," but I don't see the TeiGeki really doing much ambushing; 'gei' in this case means "meet, greet, welcome, or engage" and 'geki' here means "attack, beat, or conquer," so draw your own conclusions. Hana-Gumi - Hana means flower; Gumi means 'association,' 'group,' or 'division.' Other gumi in Sakura Taisen 2 include the Kaze(wind)-Gumi, Tsuki(moon)-Gumi, and Bara(rose)-Gumi.) ……また帝撃で一働きしてもらうぜ、大神。 ......You'll be working with us again in the TeiGeki, Oogami. (粉骨砕身 Funkotsu-saishin - 粉骨 Funkotsu, translated as "earnestness" or "diligence" in the New Nelson Japanese-English Character Dictionary, literally means "powder bone" (i.e., skeletal remains now dust). 砕身 Saishin, translated as "extreme hardship," literally means "crushed self." 覚悟 Kakugo means "preparation" (usually as in "Prepare yourself (to die)!") - thus the whole phrase may translate to "I am prepared to fight until my very self is crushed to nothing but the powdery remains of my skeleton!" - but then again, maybe not...) 米田 あ~あ、 それじゃきばりすぎだぜ、大神。 Ahh, ahh... that's overdoing just a bit, Oogami. An actual explicit definition doesn't accurately capture the mood of the statement; it is far better to understand the word 勝手 'katte' as you come in contact with it as carrying a certain sentiment rather than to try and equate it with an English phrase.
