-Sangokushi VI- Dreamcast

Special Thanks for the article by Faust -

Sangokushi 6 is a historical strategy simulation from Koei. Released as Romance of the Three Kingdoms in North America, the Sangokushi series has achieved much success with it's past efforts, spanning systems from the Super Famicom/Super NES, to Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation, and has even appeared on the PC.

The game takes place in the "Three Kingdoms" period of China's history, where a great civil war is going on for control of China. The story of the era, features the classic idea of a people's hero, Lui Bei, as well as the violent dictator, Dung Zhao, and his adopted son Lu Bu, who is one of the most feared warriors in history. The player can assume the role of these generals, and dozens more, in a number of different Scenarios that take place at different points of the war. Also, you can create your own leader and generals, to change history how ever you please.

The objective of the game is to conquer China, through battle, alliance, betrayal, whatever you choose! The battle system follows the standard strategy game formula, of a "marker" representing soldiers is moved across a grid, to get close enough to fight with the opposing army. What makes this game, and the series, unique in it's battles is special strategies you can use, some of which you have to setup long before the battle even begins. Set fires to burn your enemy repeatedly, plant your own generals in their ranks and in the midst of battle bring them, and some of the enemie's troops, back over to your side!

Overall, a great experience. However there are 2 major downsides to the game... First off, the complicated gameplay can be hard to understand for the casual gamer, espiecally if you own the game import, and it is all in Japanese as well! Also, the graphics are laughable for the Dreamcast. I guess they are adequete, and graphics should never be let ruin a game, but Koei could have done much better with very little effort...
