Blue Stinger is another Sega made Resident Evil clone,
in the same vein as Deep Fear. The basic story is this... Eliot
Ballad, a member of a special rescue team(sound familiar yet?),
is vacationing with a friend off the coast of Dinosaur Island, an
island which was created by a meteor years earlier. A large research
lab had sprung up on the island, as well as a surrounding town.
While Eliot and his friend are talking, something strikes the island
without warning, and a large barrier shoots outward and surrounds
the island, trapping Eliot on the inside and his friend outside,
with his arm stuck in the barrier. Following immediatly after Eliot
is attacked by some mutant dragon fly like creatures. Obviously
something isn't right here, so it is up to Eliot to figure out just
what is going on. He is later joined by ship captain Dogs and Jeanine,
part of the island security.
The game suffers from some severe story problems early
on which continue throughout the game, and overall, while it does
have a decent ending(a scene after the credits is awesome... I won't
spoil it, just play the game and see it...), the story leaves much
to be desired. And, unfourtunatly it has none of the inherent suspense
it's Playstation and Saturn ancestors were full of. It comes across
as more of a glorified action game than the suspense/cinematic horror
it is supposed to be. However, don't let my words here fool you,
the game is very enjoyable, and in some people's opinion even surpases
Resident Evil 2.
Graphics and sound wise, it does everything you'd
expect from the first generation Dreamcast games. Great, better
than anything before it, but still somewhat lacking for what the
system can do.
Another key point of anygame is replayability, and
while this game does not have multiple stories to play through like
the Resident Evil series, it does offer a horde of secrets to discover.
All things considered, the game could have been so much more, but
is still something great in it's current state. I have even read
things saying there were plans to make Dogs controllable simultaneously
as Eliot, which would have made the game without peer in my opinion.
So in short, great game, english dialouge is espiecally good for
import gamers. Creepy character designs too, but don't expect it
to scare you like Resident Evil. Let's call it "RE Lite"
